Surber Samplers are used for quantitative analysis of benthic stream organisms and can be used in shallow streams less than 18" deep with a range of bottoms from silt to large cobble. The sampler consists of a 12" x 12" horizontal frame that sets on the stream bottom to border the sampling area and is used to stir up the bottom sediments and invertebrates. The standard size net measures 9" diameter and 24" long and is attached to the vertical frame to catch the benthic invertebrates and sediments as the horizontal frame is agitated and they flow into the net. Nets are available in rugged Nitex nylon. Optional base extensions that attach to the bottom of the frame are available for use in areas of fine sediments to allow the operator to minimize movement of organisms outside of the sampling area. All samplers include carrying case.
